Herbert Hoover came to Newberg in November 1885 from West Branch, Iowa as an orphaned 11-year old. When he left from Salem in 1891 to join the first class at Stanford University, he was a self-confident 17-year old aspiring to become a mining engineer. He achieved even more in his roles as an outstanding engineer, a great humanitarian, a president during the Great Depression, and an elder statesman.
